Grant Faulkner: Find a story idea that you love and is meaningful to you.

For some people, it can be as simple as getting an idea in the shower or when they’re driving to work. Other people may be much more conscious and deliberate. They may go looking for story ideas in the newspaper or may start a story because of a writing prompt. Once you get a story idea, you have to decide, is this story calling me? Do I really need to write it? That’s how a story is really formed.

Try using writing prompts to come up with a story idea. There are a ton of free ones out there that you can look up online

Additional Research Think about the driving force behind your story idea and use it to drive your writing. Whether it’s a theme, a storyline, an image, or an idea, use the driving force to act like a seed that the rest of your book will grow from. For instance, if you have the image of your main character as an orphaned girl in the snow just after losing her parents, you can keep that image in your mind to help propel the rest of your writing.

Keep in mind you may end up not even using the original image that drives your story creation. But it can be a helpful way to get the ball rolling

Question 2 of 5: What are your best tips for getting through projects as large as a book?

Grant Faulkner: Set a goal and a writing deadline for yourself.

Break down the huge chunk of work that writing a book is into smaller chunks. For instance, the goal of NaNoWriMo is to write 50, 000 words in a month, which breaks down to 1667 words a day. Then, you have to show up to write every day with the determination to meet that goal. A deadline helps put pressure on your writing.

    • Joining a community of other writers committed to writing a book, such as NaNoWriMo can help encourage you and hold you accountable to meet your goals. It’s a great way to stay on track!
    • The key to writing a book is putting in the work. Like William Faulkner said, “Writing is 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration.”

Additional Research Try different strategies to see what works best for you. Some writers like to go to coffee shops a few times a week and try to hit a specific word count. Others may use note cards and sticky notes to outline their chapters, then write for days at a time. Writing is tough, and you may find that you want to give up at times. But with an effective strategy, you can make it easier to stick with it.

Question 3 of 5: How can writers incorporate meaningful themes into their writing?

Grant Faulkner: Write the story and identify the themes as you write it.

The best themes emerge naturally from the story itself and aren’t grafted onto it. Part of writing the story is exploring the possible themes and letting them emerge.

Additional Research Ask yourself questions about your story and your characters to help find identify themes. Look at your characters and see what they’re passionate about and what their goals are. Their passions can help bring themes to light. Ask yourself, “What is my book about?” and think about all of the potential themes under the surface of your story. Ask lots of questions to try to dig up underlying themes.

Question 4 of 5: What do you recommend for someone who’s finished a draft and wants to publish?

Grant Faulkner: Get feedback and work with an editor or self-publish your book.

When you finish a draft, you’ll need to revise it. Send your draft to other people you trust to read it and give you feedback you can use in your revisions. When you’re ready to publish, you can submit your manuscript to an agent and work with an editor to finalize it. You can also self-publish your book, but in order to do it well, you’ll need to learn about how to do it.

Additional Research You may want to decide whether you want to self-publish or traditionally publish your book before you start writing it. A traditionally published book will normally land you an advance sum of money and you can receive royalties after you “earn out” your advance. A self-published book means you’ll have more control over what goes into the book and what it looks like, which can also mean more work for you. But, you’ll get to keep all of the money you make from each copy you sell.

        grant faulkner: absolutely!

13-year-olds write books every year and there are thousands of them that do it. like a lot of endeavors in life, especially creative endeavors, it’s largely about just telling yourself that you can do it.

additional research try writing like your favorite author. that doesn’t mean you should plagiarize them. but if you like the way they write, you can study their books to figure out what it is you like about their style and use it in your own writing. for instance, if you really love suzanne collins books like the hunger games series, you can emulate her writing by studying how she constructs her story and creates her characters.
